Pip and Posy: The Snowy Day

Axel Scheffler. Candlewick/Nosy Crow, $12.99 (32p) ISBN 978-0-7636-6607-1

In Pip and Posy’s fifth adventure, a day of playing in the snow gets downright frosty after the two friends differ on the snow animal they want to build; Pip (a rabbit) wants to create a snowrabbit, while Posy (a mouse) has other ideas. Scheffler’s chunky mixed-media paintings capture the intense emotions that often accompany young friendships, and he deftly uses humor to prevent the story from being overly didactic (“Posy was so mad at Pip that she threw the snow creature’s head at him. Oh, dear!”). Happily, this conflict is nothing that a few apologies and some modeling clay can’t fix. Ages 2–5. (Oct.)
