The Ugly Book

Andrew Davies. Barron's Educational Series, $8.95 (96pp) ISBN 978-0-7641-5857-5

The animal kingdom isn't all beauty and majesty, as this quirky little gift book, which spotlights some of Mother Nature's least appealing offspring, shows. But ugly is certainly subjective. Is a Pug really repugnant? According to Davies's caption, ""in life there are different forms of ugly. There's Pug ugly."" Though each photo is accompanied by a quip like this, the captions don't identify the various animal species, and Davies's humor often falls flat (beneath a fish with an open mouth: ""A touch of collagen here and there to make your lips oh-so kissable.""). Readers would do better to enjoy the photographs, some of which are stunning, and ignore the commentary.
