Eyes to See

Joseph Nassise. Tor, $22.99 (320p) ISBN 978-0-7653-2718-5

Nassise (the Templar Chronicles) takes readers on a bumpy trip through Boston’s magical history and dark secrets. Jeremiah Hunt, blinded in a magical ritual that he hoped would help him locate his missing daughter, can speak to the dead and see through their eyes. When obscene murders are committed near Boston, Hunt is unofficially called in to feel out the vibes, and he soon learns that no human could have committed these crimes. Plot twists lead to a crescendo of paranormal activity. Witchcraft, ghosts, raunchy humor, and mayhem keep things moving, but Nassise has an unfortunate habit of emphasizing Hunt’s blindness and then offering vivid visual descriptions of Hunt’s surroundings, which undercuts the intriguing concept of a blind man navigating the paranormal world’s real and metaphorical shadows.
