Warrior of Fate

Debra Mullins. Tor, $15.99 trade paper (304p) ISBN 978-0-7653-7615-2

Mullins continues her tradition of solid storytelling about the world of Atlantean descendants in the third Truthseers paranormal romance (after Heart of Stone). Tessa Montana is the protected, spoiled daughter of the Montana clan: the baby sister, the only girl, and a True Seer. Her talents, like her temper, are unpredictable. Adrian Gray, a warrior, has been sent to guard the Montana family%E2%80%94and more importantly, keep the third of the mystical Stones of Ekhia out of the hands of an Atlantean madman. This is his only chance for redemption after he inadvertently allowed the loss of the second stone. Both he and Tessa have heard the myths of destined mates, but they can only experience that delight for themselves if they survive. A fairly slow start, and a somewhat unlikable heroine, quickly give way to Mullins's trademark action and superb world-building. Familiar faces and passionate embraces ease readers back into the magical world, making up for a slightly shallower-than-normal characterization. Agent: Lucienne Diver, Knight Agency (Oct.)
