The Lost
Sarah Beth Durst. Mira, $14.95 trade paper (352p) ISBN 978-0-7783-1711-1
YA author Durst (Drink, Slay, Love) makes a rather macabre foray into literary urban fantasy for adults. Lauren Chase she leaves for work one morning and refuses to take the left turn her normal route requires. Instead, she continues to drive until she’s confronted with a sign that welcomes her to Lost, the place where everything lost—people, places and things—winds up. Trapped in a hamlet surrounded by a dust storm known as the void, she finds more questions than answers and more enemies than friends. With thoughts of going home always on her mind, she steps into her bizarre new world with trepidation, trying to help others while finding her own way back. The story is both charming and painfully emotional at times, but it occasionally drags and leaves many questions unanswered. Agent: Andrea Somberg, Harvey Klinger. (June)
