Fathers, Sons and Golf: Lessons in Honor and Integrity

Andrew Shanley. Hyperion Books, $22.45 (224pp) ISBN 978-0-7868-6245-0

When his sons, Colin and McLean, were 13 and 10, respectively, ad exec and ex-reporter Shanley introduced them to golf as a way of teaching moral and spiritual values. The results exceeded his fondest expectations. Concerned that so many young people today participate in sports organized by adults, the author determined not to be overly didactic in his approach. As the boys began to play, he tried to help them see the value of paying attention in every aspect of life and to gain an understanding of the camaraderie on the links. He also stressed the challenge of the game, which becomes increasingly difficult as the player grows more skilled. Shanley, a religious man, concludes with a strong spiritual dose that may not have the same impact on many readers as earlier portions of the book, but parents may find his lessons well taught and teachable, and so well worth heeding.
