I'm Hiding: A Pop-Up Guess Who Book

Pop-up and pull-tab predators frighten a panoply of potential prey into hiding in this elaborately conceived but inconsistently engineered book. Densely layered cut-paper art fills every bit of each double-page spread, whether creating a lush jungle setting where a tiger lurks behind a pull-tab bush or a swirling ocean floor where a shark hides beneath a diecut gatefold flap. As the predators are revealed, pull-tabs help other creatures conceal themselves in a high-stakes round of hide-and-seek. With at least four moving parts, each tableau seems guaranteed to hold the reader's attention, but occasional collisions and sticky pull-tab mechanisms undermine the book's overall success. A school of tiger fish is as likely to crash into a clump of seaweed as swim behind it, for example, and tabs and flaps bend alarmingly easily. It's too bad this dynamic-looking book didn't get the production it deserves. Ages 2-6. (May)
