A World of Prayers

Prayer seems to come more easily to children, who are not as hung-up on the formalities of talking with God as grownups can be. So goes the philosophy of Brooks, who here gathers children's prayers from around the globe. He arranges numerous entries into thematic sections such as "Mealtime Graces" and "Prayers for Nighttime," offering a brief introduction to each category. Throughout, Gomez's textured, mixed-media artwork introduces imagery from different countries and cultures, as well as such universally recognizable objects as fruit, bread, moon and stars. The stylized design often rolls the art across a spread, offering varying perspectives. A prayer from India about a hen protecting its chicks under its wings is accompanied by a memorable painting of a large white hen shielding two sleeping children, while bold red tail feathers depict Indian motifs. This accessible anthology celebrates such common themes of prayer as love and gratitude, and also the diverse ways they are expressed. All ages. (Jan.)
