Basil of Bywater Hollow

Jill Baker. Henry Holt & Company, $10.45 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-8050-0268-3

Basil is an affable gentleman bear who, alas, can't do anything right. He splits his breeches picking raspberries and then spills his basket of berries before he can make his famous tarts. Most of his friends love him despite his flaws, and they are all counting on him to win the pie-eating contest at the local fair. But in the midst of the contest, a storm breaks out and the fair tent collapses on the participants. Now Basil has his moment of glory as he holds open a side of the tent and helps everyone escape to safety. This British import has beautiful, detailed illustrations reminiscent of Beatrix Potter. But Basil is just a tad precious, and the resolution of his problem is too predictable. Ages 58. (May)
