The Successful Landlord: How to Make Money Without Making Yourself Nuts

Kenneth M. Roth. AMACOM/American Management Association, $19.95 (284pp) ISBN 978-0-8144-7228-6

In this often helpful though workmanlike guide, Roth, a lawyer specializing in real estate, offers advice on the ins and outs of renting. Written for the first-time or potential landlord, the book guides readers through the steps of deciding whether or not to rent a place, how to set a price, how to advertise and finally, how to deal with tenants. Early on, Roth tries too hard to attract readers by using the kind of language found in motivational business books (i.e.,""I want to discuss two crucial concepts that you need to master to become a successful landlord. These are attitude and leadership""), but his advice comes through nevertheless. Included in the appendices are such essential items as sample leases, release records, security deposit letters and late notices.
