NOT BY BREAD ALONE: Daily Reflections for Lent 2003

Peter Feldmeier, . . The Liturgical Press, $4 (96pp) ISBN 978-0-8146-2751-8

The Liturgical Press continues its annual tradition of Lenten reflections with this diminutive paperback, suitable for toting around in a purse or a pocket. Based on the daily Mass readings for Lent, the book is most suitable for Roman Catholics, though other Christians may also appreciate its concise and thoughtful meditations. It opens with Ash Wednesday and closes with Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. Lent, says Feldmeier in his introduction, is a season of repentance but also one of great joy. "What could be more joyful than to let go of the chatter in our minds and hearts?" he asks. The daily reflections are meaty and sometimes surprising, but the one- to two-sentence prayers that follow each reflection seem simplistic by comparison. (Feb.)
