The Hawaiian art world, writes James Jensen of the Contemporary Museum in his introduction, is ""a contemporary melting pot, a complex and richly varied composite of many contrasting but coexisting elements: ethnic ancestries, cultural heritages, educational backgrounds, personal sensibilities, political views, and social outlooks."" In Artists/Hawaii, editors Joan Clarke and Diane Dods and photographer Dana Edmunds address the work of 22 artists. According to Clarke and Dods, the interviews and photos ""capture a personal picture of the artist and his or her work."" Of the four pictured works per artist, two pieces were identified as ""career best"" and two as ""outstanding recent works.""
