Re-Create Your Life: Transforming Yourself and Your World Through the Decision Maker Process
Morty Lefkoe. Butterworth-Heinemann, $22.95 (256pp) ISBN 978-0-8362-2167-1
A business management consultant, Lefkoe describes his copyrighted ""Decision Maker Process"" as identifying a problematic behavior, finding the underlying belief supporting it, eliminating the belief and becoming the creator of one's own life by continuing to eliminate and create beliefs of one's choosing. This means that instead of obsessing on a particular problem such as bulimia, one should examine the belief system that supports it (""Eating is the only control I have over my life""). There's a lot riding on Lefkoe's rather nebulous use of the word ""belief"" and there's certainly nothing new about the psychotherapeutic practice of looking beyond a given symptom to the deep, complex source of neurotic behavior. Lefkoe stresses repeatedly that he has no credentials in psychology, psychotherapy or recovery counseling, save a long stint with est, as trainee and then as group leader. Whatever useful help he offers is obscured by his grandiose claims for the successful application of his method, outlined here in a few emblematic case studies. Not only does he say that it permanently changes people and their lives when methods of psychotherapy and treatments cannot, but he envisions changing the world--organizations, businesses, schools, institutions and governments--by implementing his method on a grand scale: ""I expect this book will spawn thousands of formal and informal research projects on how best to use the DM Process and Technology in every area of life.""
