The Price of Peace

Cahal B. Daly. Blackstaff Press, $0 (251pp) ISBN 978-0-85640-471-9

Speaking as a Christian pastor, the author, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, addresses the troubles of Northern Ireland in a series of homilies and other colloquia delivered from 1982 to 1990. His is a vigorous and impassioned voice, reasonable but not pietistic. Proposing an ultimate blending of the British and Irish traditions rooted in what is common to both sides' vision and aspiration, he does not diminish the difficulties of union, including those of semantics and nomenclature, the paramilitary presence and political and religious sectarianism. Daly's recurring theme in his articulation of the Gospel message is individual and group responsibility. (May)
