Miami En Brumas

Nicolas Abreu Felippe. Cdiciones Universal, $16 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-89729-919-0

This is a tragic love story about Maximo and Dulce, two Cubans who sustain a romance in spite of a long separation and a series of catastrophes. Through these principal characters, Felippe tells a heartbreaking story of Cubans and their relatives exiled in Miami. Maximo is an unhappy bureaucrat who has remarried and has a family and a yacht. Dulce, widowed and living in Cuba, is watching the continuous deterioration of Havana and the people around her. Abreu Felippe develops his novel using alternate chapters describing Maximo's life in Miami and Dulce's life in Havana, allowing the reader to notice the sharp contrasts between life in the two countries. Eventually, Dulce decides to leave the island and attempts to contact Maximo to see if he can help her. The des- criptions of the preparation for the escape and the escape itself are full of details. Balanced and accurate in its des- criptions of life in Cuba and Miami, this is highly recommended for large public libraries and bookstores serving Cuban customers.
