Mi Vida en el Teatro = Mu Life in the Theater

Maria Julia Casanova. Cdiciones Universal, $19 (125pp) ISBN 978-0-89729-934-3

Cuba's first lady of the theater, Casanova here covers the period of her life from the 1940s through the '80s. To date the only woman to achieve success as a writer and director in Cuban theater, Casanova des- cribes theater in Cuba before Castro, when art, she states, ""was a main preoccupation on the island."" She herself was responsible for numerous theatrical works in Cuba, as well as many conferences related to theater arts. Capturing primarily her early impressions, this autobiography describes the people who influenced her and her path to success. She began as a teenager by creating stage sets, progressed to musical theater, participated in theater in Mexico and London, appeared on television and radio, and ultimately founded her own theater company. Now living ""in exile"" in Miami but still active in theater, she insists on free- dom of cultural expression the reason, she states, for writing her memoirs. Recommended for public libraries, especially those on the East Coast, and for bookstores with extensive theater sections in Spanish. Nedra C. Evers, Sacramento P.L., CA
