If Good Housekeeping had stuck closer to the land, it might be like Harrowsmith, the Canadian magazine that has put together this latest compendium of readers' recipes. The eternal problem of such democratic cookbooks comes in walking the line between the familiar and the exotic. A true reflection of North American mealtimes would be dullwe all already know about pasta carbonarabut reaching for the offbeat creates a hodgepodge short on context. This volume suffers on both counts as it runs from good old sticky buns, glazed carrots and oyster stew to Korean bulgogi, vegetarian couscous and braised rabbit. There's something for everyone, but this rather responsible approach yields a book full of recipes we've seen, and eaten, too often before. (February)
