The Yanov Torah

Erwin Herman. Kar-Ben Publishing, $9.95 (48pp) ISBN 978-0-930494-45-2

Kahn's drawings vivify events in a true account written by the Hermans in the words of Dr. Emanuel Orlove (a pseudonym). Before emigrating with his family from Poland in 1980, Orlove met his father and a fellow survivor of a Nazi work camp, Yanov, who entrusted to the doctor the Yanov Torah. The sacred scroll had been smuggled into the camp by brave Jews and zealously guarded after the prisoners were released. Orlove promised to bring the Torah to America where it is taken from temple to temple, signifying t'chiyas hamayseem, God's ability to bring the dead to life: ""Millions of Jews have died but the Torah lives.''
