The No-Hit Hall of Fame: No-Hitters of the 20th Century

Rich Coberly. Triple Play Publications, $0 (226pp) ISBN 978-0-934289-00-9

Coberly provides a page of summary of each of the 177 no-hit games pitched in baseball's major leagues between 1900 and 1984. About half of the accounts are reprinted from contemporary newspaper articles; these provide a fascinating look at the early days of the game, when baseball slang was often different (""centrefielders'' chased down ``leathers'' near the ``stockade'') and sports journalism was in some ways more ebullient than today. (``Peckinpaugh continues to prove himself the best shortstop on the Western, Eastern and all other Hemispheres.'') Unfortunately, other entriesparticularly for the more recent and more famous no-hittersare compilations written by Coberly in a style that mixes modern and old usageand makes the reader wonder which words are borrowed and which are Coberly's. Nonetheless, the No-Hit Hall of Fame is a baseball fan's delight, providing the opportunity to relive some of the game's most exciting moments. Photos not seen by PW. December
