Marilyn Segal. Newmarket Press, $16.95 (218pp) ISBN 978-0-937858-72-1

This is the fourth volume of the Your Child at Play series, which has been written in toto by Segal and Adcock, who are associated with the Family Center at Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Adcock is also a professor in Colo.) The authors divide the book into five sections, ""Conversational Play,'' ``Discovery Play,'' ``Creative Play,'' ``Playing with Letters and Numbers'' and ``Playing with Friends.'' Each chapter includes helpful ``Suggestions for Parents.'' (The authors recommend, for example, that when children playact, parents either take the part of an appreciative audience or participate, keeping in mind that ``the trick is to participate in the play without taking it over.'') Like other works in the series, this book takes a creative and rewarding approach to playing with children. Macmillan Book Club selection. (January)
