Bringing Back the Animals

Teresa Kennedy. Amethyst Books, $15.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-944256-06-0

This collection of ``biographies'' of endangered species identifies threatened wildlife around the world and the measures being taken to protect the creatures and their habitats. Facts, anecdotes and physical descriptions of the bottle-nosed dolphin, African elephant and the water buffalo, among others, are presented in no-nonsense language. Each spread includes an illustration of the featured animal. In an unfortunate juxtaposition, however, Williams's renderings are merely representative, and her misshapen beasts--sometimes sporting smiles and rosy cheeks--greatly detract from the information-packed text. In addition, the oversized picture-book format is not likely to hold much appeal for the intended age group. Sadly, this earnest plea for the continued support of conservationists may not find its audience. The book includes a listing of conservation organizations. Ages 8-up. (Sept.)
