Every Day a Miracle Happens

Rodney Charles. Sunstar Publishing (IA), $17.95 (596pp) ISBN 978-0-9638502-0-1

Adopting the ``books of saints'' form familiar from classics like Butler's, Charles presents a miracle for every day of the year. While some of these stories are the well-loved ones of Christian saints, still others are of modern-day miracles. Some of the ``miracles,'' however, have little or nothing to do with Christianity per se-the story of Allen Demetrius of Pittsburgh, whose Japanese statuette wept after Hiroshima and again just before the trouble at Three Mile Island, for example. Even in treating traditional and canonical sources, Charles exercises an approach to his storytelling that is more liberal than is usually the case. Despite all of this, Miracle is an easy read and a good choice in its field that is also light and fun. (Jan.)
