Fleeting Promise: An Enescu Fleet Mystery

Sherban Young. MysteryCaper, $29 (256p) ISBN 978-0-9912324-7-5

At the start of Young’s lighthearted fifth whodunit featuring semiretired PI Enescu Fleet (after 2014’s Fleeting Chance), John Hathaway, Fleet’s narrator sidekick, shares his thoughts on being seriously wounded as he crawls bleeding across the floor of his unidentified host and hostess’s dining room before losing consciousness. He then flashes back to the events that led up to his condition. Shortly after Hathaway’s honeymoon, he and his new wife, Lesley, who have settled down the road from Casco Bay, Maine, are invited to the opening of an offbeat restaurant, Le Vrai Cornichon, which promises to fuse French cuisine with deli food. Before long, the opening turns deadly, and the guests and restaurant staff are all apparently at risk of losing their lives. The truth is connected with a previous case Fleet and Hathaway handled, a reveal provided in the preface, which advises first-timers to tackle the series in publication order. Readers who like their murders infused with dry humor will find much to enjoy. [em](BookLife) [/em]
