Melanie Scott. St. Martin’s Paperbacks, $7.99 mass market (320p) ISBN 978-1-250-04041-1

Scott imbues the third installment in her contemporary New York Saints baseball series (after Angel in Armani) with heart, soul, and a little danger. Burlesque club owner Raina Easton is hired to coach the Saints’ cheerleading squad, the Fallen Angels, and hopes for a bit of publicity for her club in the process. What she doesn’t expect is to fall fast and hard for Saints co-owner Malachi Coulter, an Army veteran and all-around protector. As the Fallen Angels come together, Raina is fighting battles on two fronts: investigating recent attempts to damage her club with graffiti and fireworks, and trying to keep her heart safe from the steadfast man determined to capture it. The snappy back-and-forth between Raina and Malachi is genuine and often funny, and the love story plausible. Readers will root, root, root for their romance to succeed and will eagerly await the next title in this solid series. Agent: Irene Goodman, Irene Goodman Literary Agency. (May)
