Poggle and the Treasure

Michael Evans. Egmont UK (IPG/Trafalgar Square, dist.), $16.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-4052-4811-2

Poggle is a teddy-bearish blue dragon with a best friend named Henry, who’s equally cuddly but of a less determinate species. Inhabiting a cheery world that’s given depth and texture by crayon-y black shading, Poggle lives at the beach (his home is a jaunty striped hut that’s “comfy and cosy and filled with his very favourite things”). It’s an ideal setting for making important discoveries, like a mysterious pink egg that the duo uncovers while playing pirates. Dramatic tension is kept to a minimum: the egg turns out to be a baby turtle that is soon reunited with its mother (“The creature gave them a huge smile. Then with a splish and a splash it was gone”). Evans deftly sidesteps treacle and spins out his stories with a light and distinctly British touch; a few novelty elements (like a dusting of glitter for a hatch of eggs) provide additional interest. Sweet, expressive, and reassuring, Poggle may be just the ticket for restoring the equilibrium of a wigged-out toddler. Also available: Poggle and the Birthday Present. Ages 1–up. (Nov.)
