Logan’s Outlaw

Elaine Levine. Kensington/Zebra, $6.99 mass market (304p) ISBN 978-1-4201-1867-4

Levine’s Men of Defiance (last seen in Leah and the Bounty Hunter) are back, shooting and scalping their way through the Old West like so many B-movie actors. Logan Taggert first notices Sarah Hawkins at a trading post, where she is catching a stage to Cheyenne, hoping to start her life over after a year of Sioux captivity. Logan instantly decides to join her on the stagecoach for her protection, and then follows her when her travel companions kick her out for being a survivor of rape, or, as they put it, a “gen-u-ine squaw” and “common trollop.” Logan believes Sarah is his soul mate and marries her despite her well-earned fear of sexual contact. Meanwhile, Logan must face his own insecurities while introducing Sarah to his adopted family and confronting the Sioux warrior who refuses to let her go. Series fans will appreciate Levine’s continued improvement. Agent: Melissa Jeglinski, the Knight Agency. (Mar.)
