Deed to Death
D.B. Henson. S&S/Touchstone, $14 trade paper (288p) ISBN 978-1-4516-4960-4
Henson's overwrought print debut follows the rousing success of her self-published e-book sales of more than 100,000 copies. Nashville real estate agent Toni Matthews is on the eve of her wedding to architect/entrepreneur Scott Chadwick when Chadwick takes a fatal fall from one of his major projects. The police are quick to rule his death suicide and, reluctantly, so are his partner, Clint Shore, and his wife, Jill, and best friend Mark Ross. Toni is convinced Scott was pushed, and her suspicions center on his younger brother, Brian Chadwick. Toni begins digging for more information, and the more she learns, the more she realizes she can't trust anyone. Henson puts her heroine through the wringer with numerous near escapes and endless betrayals as suspicion shifts from one suspect to another in quick succession. The characterizations are pretty shallow, but Henson keeps the plot churning with new revelations about Toni and Scott's friends and colleagues. (July)
