Boyfriend from Hell

Justine Clancy is a part-time law student with a criminal record. She's working her way through school in a dangerous part of town when her ex-boyfriend, Max, tries to run her over. She damns him to Hell%E2%80%94and off he goes. Justine is a Daughter of Saturn, born to dispense justice, and her deadly powers have just woken up, but no one's sure how her powers work or what cost they might take on her soul. It doesn't help that Max's ghost is haunting her mirror, swearing he was innocent. Justine is more than just a spunky heroine cipher: she earned her arrest record fair and square, and while she's smart enough to be wary of her mysterious new abilities, she's still tempted by them. Unlike many down-on-their-luck heroes who never seem to suffer, Quaid's characters are genuinely desperate, lending a real sense of danger and urgency. Without a vampire, werewolf, or fallen angel to be seen, this strong debut is a pleasantly fresh take on a well-worn genre. (Oct.)
