The Ultimate Breakfast Cookbook

Phillip Scully. George Weidenfeld & Nicholson, $0 (223pp) ISBN 978-1-55584-074-7

""Since most of you can't visit Scully's, I have brought my kitchen to you,'' says Scully, who owns a 13-table Beverly Hills establishment. Of course, an unlisted telephone number is one reason why many can't visit the fashionable eatery. (``I suppose this is a bit cocky,'' Scully acknowledges coyly.) The glamour in this volume is limited to its introduction, where Scully amusingly drops the names of famous guests in rapid succession. (``I'll never forget J. Edgar Hoover's delight at the taste of my enchiladas!'') Unfortunately, the recipes themselves are all too ordinary. Traditional breakfast items include spinach omelet, fluffy yogurt pancakes, French toast, sliced oranges and chocolate waffles. Brunches or lunches feature Irish stew, cold curry soup, tuna melt and sauteed mushrooms on toast. Such desserts as honey cake and zabaglione or drinks like coffee brule and strawberry wine daiquiri complete the meal. Gilbar is the author of The Lunch Box Book. (February 9)
