Altered Ambitions

Betsy Jaffe. Dutton Books, $19.95 (232pp) ISBN 978-1-55611-266-9

Anticipating changes in the economy and social patterns of the 1990s--especially those affecting women--this guide by career consultant Jaffe is intended to help female readers make the most of new challenges and options. Stories of how each of five women adapted herself and her goals to these changes illustrate how an unstable employment market and corporate restructuring (already underway in the 1980s) require flexibility: willingness to shift field or location and the well-recognized need to balance the demands of home and workplace. Accompanied by many test-like exercises, much of Jaffe's advice is sound. But, except for her emphasis on the increasingly unpredictable and rapid pace of change, there is little here to distinguish it from many other how-to-cope guides. (Apr.)
