Dancers in the Sunset Sky: The Musings of a Bird Hunter

Robert F. Jones. Lyons Press, $22.95 (192pp) ISBN 978-1-55821-496-5

To Jones (Upland Passage), who lives in Vermont and has been at it for 50 years, hunting is a religion, and its high priests are gundogs. He claims he was taught to hunt by a pair of half-wild Irish setters. Most of his dogs have been Labradors but he has a remarkably unlikely retriever in a Jack Russell terrier. He takes a surrogate grandson to a hunting lodge and watches the boy shoot his first bird. Jones warns that turkey hunting can be hazardous and offers nine safety tips to the unwary. Hunters will find these engaging essays much to their taste. (Aug.)
