The Serengeti Migration

Lisa Lindblad, Sven-Clof Lindblad. Hyperion Books, $15.95 (40pp) ISBN 978-1-56282-668-0

Stunning photographs turn this look at the yearly migration of millions of wildebeests and zebras across Serengeti National Park into a visual feast. The Lindblads, coauthors of an adult book about the Serengeti, trace the animals' centuries-old route, a circular pattern that begins at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania and culminates in the grasslands across the Mara River on the Kenyan border. Close-up photos of animals at rest and in motion evoke the urgency and danger of the passage, and views of the different landscapes along the route enhance the sensation of traveling with the herds. The text, while sparse, adequately documents the journey, but the most interesting details are found in the extensive, fact-filled captions. A glossary explains related terms, and an endnote briefly describes the people who inhabit the region. The book design is particularly attractive, incorporating a decorative motif from an object made in Kenya. Ages 8-12. (May)
