Glimpses of Christ

Karla Worley. Woman's Missionary Union, $13.99 (0pp) ISBN 978-1-56309-253-4

Imagine sitting at a table with a group of women having an old-fashioned coffee klatch. The conversation for the most part is light and easy and centers around each woman's faith and Christian life. Some of the women--Rosalynn Carter and Gloria Gaither--are better known than others. Then imagine returning home to reflect on scripture and to pray in order to hear what God has to say in one's own life. Therein lies the gist of this book. As editor Worley puts it: ""The women have one thing in common: at some point in their lives, they realized they were spiritually bankrupt. Each can point to a time when they opened the door of their lives to Jesus and invited Him to live there. They have built a relationship with Him, and they all say they cannot live without it."" While many of the stories offer a sanitized and sentimental religion, several others, like Sally Johnson's anguished story of becoming HIV-positive as the result of a rape and her subsequent work in a ministry with AIDS victims, depict the difficult struggle of weaving Christ into the fabric of everyday life.
