THE KING, CRUCIFIED AND RISEN: Meditations on the Passion and Glory of Christ

Benedict J. Groeschel, . . Servant, $8.99 (181pp) ISBN 978-1-56955-289-6

This collection of daily readings from Ash Wednesday to Divine Mercy Sunday (the Sunday after Easter) is a kind of sequel to Groeschel's Behold, He Comes, a book of meditations on the birth of Christ. Like that volume, these devotions are not tied directly to the Catholic liturgy for each day of the six-week season, although they are rooted in the general Catholic tradition. Groeschel writes that the key element of Lenten devotion is fervent personal prayer, which will lead to the renewal of individuals and of the Church. He encourages readers to practice some kind of fast during the penitential Lenten season (usually eating only one full meal a day), using the meditations and reflections in this book to help them more fully understand Christ's sacrifice. A special appendix offers the lyrics to hymns that are appropriate for the Lenten season. (Jan.)
