The Magnum group was established in 1947 by Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, Robert Capa and David Seymour—major photographers who were committed to freedom of expression and, correspondingly, to retaining copyright to their work. The group remains a peer-selected consortium that over the years has included Werner Bischof, Bruce Davidson, Susan Meiselas and Lise Sarfati. Former Artforum editor Kozloff (New York: Capital of Photography ) has selected 110 duotone and 42 four-color photos representing the group over time—and the city-dwellers who have proved such an inspiration to them.
