Gr 2-4-This large-format book features colorful maps and illustrations along with a wealth of information. The first few pages offer a basic introduction to atlases as reference tools. They explain perspective and the proper use of map coordinates for locating specific locations. The equator, climate zones, vegetation, and topography are all described in easy-to-comprehend language, followed by actual maps of continents, featuring native animals, capital cities, natural resources, major industries, and tourist highlights. The oceans are also studded with pictures of native fish and types of boats (such as cruise ships, sailing ships, and barges). Each page has an inset called ""Datos"" with special facts about the continent highlighted. A second inset, ""Explorador,"" poses questions that prompt readers to further navigate the map. One example is the question, ""What is the name of the smallest independent country in South America?"" The answer appears immediately after the question as map coordinates. This introductory atlas offers well-balanced coverage of all continents. The well-organized and attractively designed format will hold readers' interest. Recommended for public and elementary school libraries. w
