Artists in Camera: A Gallery of Star Portraits by Photographer Roy Jones

Michael Owen. Prion, $0 (166pp) ISBN 978-1-85375-036-6

Jones, a photographer for London's Evening Standard , here presents his black-and-white pictures, arranged alphabetically from Astaire to Zeffirelli, though inexplicably leaving out dates when the shots were taken. Guinness opens the volume rightly praising Jones's ability to capture the ``lived-in'' look of familiar individuals; indeed, Jones does not glamorize his subjects, recording instead candid expressions and the lines of age and experience on their faces. Owen's anecdotal captions, too, shed light on a moody Peter Sellers; a ``tranquil, going on saintly'' John Cleese; Mia Farrow during her months with the Royal Shakespeare Company; and former Kirov ballerina Natalia Makarova. This collection will be appreciated for its journalistic style and for bringing usually larger-than-life stage, screen and arts-related personalities to an accessible, human level. (Feb.)
