Jane Cumberbatch’s Recipes for Every Day

Jane Cumberbatch. Pavilion, $34.95 (272p) ISBN 978-1-86205-912-2

More journal than straightforward cookbook, this volume is a seasonally organized yet appealingly haphazard collection of recipes, notes, and ideas—all illustrated by inviting photos of rustic interiors, homegrown gardens, and comforting foods. Cumberbatch, the British founder of the Pure Style Web site and author of several Pure Style books, explains that she loves to “cook, to garden, and to make things.” And her book offers inspiration and information for anyone who wants to do the same. She includes tips on everything from sowing seeds to sewing patchwork, plus notes on such topics as wild roses and “how to make marmalade groovy.” Recipes such as bread and tomato (pan con tomate); mozzarella and rocket salad; mushroom and chestnut stuffing; and apple and ginger pudding are simple and approachable. While she’s better known for home decorating, here is plenty of solid culinary know-how. (Dec.)
