The Hawks of Kamalon

Michael Reisig. Write Way Publishing, $7.99 (400pp) ISBN 978-1-885173-60-7

In this interplanetary adventure, in which people from our world are magically transferred to another, an agglomeration of British and American WWII aircraft, commanded by Captain Ross Murdock, is summoned across the light-years by the ""Sensitive Mothers"" of distant Kamalon. Soon, Murdock and his 51 Squadron find that they have overextended themselves: while providing essential air support for the people of Azra, who are faced with an invasion from their enemies of Krete, they are also trying to fend off Germans both in 1944 and on Kamalon. Reisig, a journalist and author of the novel The New Madrid Run, tries to elicit emotion by creating scenes in which soldiers are exhorted to ""Fight to the last breath in our body."" While his tactics are worthy of Ambrose P. Burnside, both the writing style and the depiction of women will remind readers more of Edgar Rice Burroughs. (May) FYI: New Madrid Run is being produced as a motion picture.
