Gr 2-4-The very lively format and text style of this book make for high visual impact. The kid-friendly design begins with several pages of interactive quizzes, puzzles, games, and mazes. Each informative chapter attempts to answer one basic question (e.g., ""Why does the earth shake and spew fire?""), covering earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, lightening, and much more. Key concepts are highlighted in yellow. The book also offers a 20-page short story written by Gabriela Keselman and illustrated by Teresa Gonzalez called ""Ratonix, un caso de emergencia"" (""Ratonix, an Emergency Situation""). Small black-and-white photographs are adequate, but not exciting. Among the various appendixes, there is one called ""La mochila del sinverguenza,"" which roughly translates into ""The Book Bag of the Shameless,"" for readers who want more information and aren't afraid of being called a know-it-all. The ""Saber"" series publishes nonfiction titles like this one at three different age levels. Recommended for school and public libraries. M.O.B.
