Atlas Visual de Ciencias [With CDROM]

. Grupo Oceano, $70 (0pp) ISBN 978-84-494-1308-7

Gr 6-9-This volume gives extensive coverage to many different branches of science: physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, mineralogy, ecology, anatomy, physiology, biology, zoology (vertebrate and invertebrate), and botany. The chapter on physics, for example, is 83 pages long. The generous use of illustrations is expected in a visual atlas and this one abounds with original drawings, scientific charts, and diagrams, as well as occasional full-color photographs. The textbook style layout with good use of headings and inset boxes make this dense text user-friendly. Subject guides are present in the form of indented tabs along the edge. Each section begins with a summary and an introduction. Although over 20 editorial team members are listed on the title verso page, none of the essays or sections is signed. No sources are cited within the subject sections or in the form of a bibliography at the end of the work. Despite these failings, this offers a good overall introduction to the various fields of science and would be helpful when used in combination with other texts. The accompanying CD is strictly a supplement and does not mirror the print version. It offers a dictionary, a chronology, a biographical section on important figures in science, an image atlas, a collection of formulas grouped by subject, a subject index that refers to the print version, and an analytical index that lists detailed subjects alphabetically. As an added bonus, the Windows-based CD also offers two entertaining games. Recommended for public and school libraries. M.O.B.
