When first-born children learn that their mothers are pregnant and a new sibling arrives, feelings of jealousy and anger are inevitable. This small book by a German author is full of practical information that will strengthen familial relationships during this difficult time. The advice is sound: early in the pregnancy, tell the older child to expect the sibling so that the birth will not be a surprise, treat each child as an individual and give each private time with each parent, and recognize that sibling rivalry and arguments are important for socialization and learning to solve problems. In this well-organized book, the text consists of short paragraphs, with headings in blue; major points are highlighted in the margins, with suggestions for teaching the older child appearing on a beige background. There are many photographs of smiling blonde children as well as pictures of partially clothed pregnant mothers who are allowing their older children feel their stomachs to get a sense of their unborn siblings. Some readers may find the latter pictures to be a bit immodest, but this book has a great deal of useful information for growing families. Recommended to public libraries and book-stores. Barbara M.
