Japan: Light and Shadows in the Land of the Rising Sun

Iago Corazza and Greta Ropa. White Star (Sterling, dist.), $45 (272p) ISBN 978-88-544-0574-5

Japanese cultural identity is both steeped in tradition and gripped by commerce and technology. With this in mind, Corazza and Ropa deliver a resplendent depiction of the complex Land of the Rising Sun. Engagingly annotated, the Italian-Japanese cast of contributors offer additional perspective with enthusiastic and candid introductions. Inspired by their changing perceptions during multiple trips to Japan, principle authors Corazza and Ropa share their experiences anecdotally as well as optically in efforts to articulate the extraordinary balance on display. Exploring the two "capitals" is immediately absorbing; Tokyo stands in stark contrast to the tranquil landscape of Kyoto and its vibrant cherry blossoms and elegant Geishas. Social behavior is vividly analyzed with explicit reference to public dining and use of language, but the most striking photographs expose a generation of Japanese youth obsessed with fashion, media, and the pursuit of "not beauty, but diversity." The authors address spiritual beliefs, art, and industry, cultural and generational diversity, and unearth ancient customs of sword making, calligraphy, and Sumo, as well as an animated nightlife (involving both Pachinko and other less wholesome entertainments like the "Lolita complex"). This dramatic portrait of a nation where conflicting cultural attitudes and values coexist is charming, frank, and modestly profound. Photos. (May)
