La Vida Util de Pillo Polilla

Vivian Mansour Manzur. Ediciones Castillo, $7.95 (110pp) ISBN 978-970-20-0129-4

Gr 3-5-This is the tale of a polilla, a bookworm, and his transformation from book-eater to a reader. Pillo has never questioned why he and his friends and family eat the pages of books. But one day, while at grandfather Polilla's funeral (he was tragically smashed in the pages of a book), the youngster notices the text on a page and becomes curious about its significance. He seeks the help of Policarpo, the oldest worm and the only one who knows how to read. Policarpo agrees to teach Pillo how to read with one stipulation: Pillo must locate a book that will explain why bookworms exist. The student agrees to this method of payment, unaware of the dangerous adventures that await him in the new worlds he is about to encounter. Young readers will become absorbed in this entertaining and educational adventure, as they follow Pillo in his travels from book to book and location to location. This title is not only fun to read, but also significant in its messages about self-development, creativity, and the importance of knowledge. Along with its wonderful array of characters and the colorful, vibrant illustrations that appear to be a trademark of the Ediciones Castillo publications, it is sure to be a hit with young readers. Highly recommended for all collections. Celia C. P rez, Univ. of Chicago
