F*cked: Being Sexually Explorative and Self-Confident in a World That’s Screwed
Corine Fisher and Krystyna Hutchinson. HarperOne, $26.99 (248p) ISBN 978-0-06-266691-8
Mixing dating advice with stories from their own sexcapades, comedians Fisher and Hutchinson expand on themes from their popular podcast, Guys We F*cked: The Anti-Slut-Shaming Podcast, in this unabashedly blunt guide to sex. The authors address topics such as slut shaming, three ways, and casual sex, all the while stressing the importance of communication, whether it’s about kinks, getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases, or using protection. Much of their advice is based on the simple premise that “secrecy feeds shame.” They counteract sexual taboos with brash humor and vulgar tales from their own personal lives, as with the story of Hutchinson’s unfortunate encounter with a dildo one recent Christmas that landed her in the ER with a burst ovarian cyst. On the topic of period sex, Fisher writes, “Having sex with a chick on her period is like getting a flash pass to an orgasm,” and suggests stealing a towel from the gym—it can get messy. Their more serious advice is often trite (“As long as we keep straight, single women questioning their value, men will always be the hottest commodity”), and the chapter on consent only skims the surface of an important issue for their target readership: young women. Still, their main message that women should not be ashamed of their sexuality comes across loud and clear. (Nov.)
