Manual of Weight-Training
. Sportshelf & Soccer Associates, $19.5 (187pp) ISBN 978-0-09-147821-6
Geared to athletes who supplement their primary-sport training with a weight program, this British import features contributors who will be unknown to most Americans. Nonetheless, their athletic expertise enhances the sensible manual and gives it an authority often absent in domestic guides. Although the illustrations' style seems dated, the weight-training information for swimmers, wrestlers, boxers, rowers and scullers, soccer players and judo practitioners is solid and effectively conveyed. A section on bodybuilding and weightlifting for fitness is not on a par with some American treatments of the subject, but the final section on Olympic weightlifting and powerliftingespecially the chapter by Britain's national weightlifting coachcogently delves into a sport Americans generally know only from television.
