George Gershwin: An Intimate Portrait
Walter Rimler. University of Illinois Press, $29.95 (204pp) ISBN 978-0-252-03444-2
In this brief biography of Gershwin, Rimler (A Gershwin Companion: A Critical Inventory and Discography, 1916-1984) excels at exploring the composer's personal relationships, particularly those with women and with his brother Ira and Ira's wife, Leonore-whose cruelty to George at the end of his life, Rimler claims, has been ignored by previous biographers. The author's description of the vicissitudes of Porgy and Bess, not least the unfavorable early critical response, is also a highlight. Verdict In the crowded field of Gershwin books, it is difficult to recommend this as a first or only source, especially as it contains little analysis of Gershwin's music. Perhaps the best comprehensive treatment is Howard Pollack's George Gershwin: His Life and Work. Rimler's biography is recommended for readers wanting a fresh look at Gershwin's private life.-Bruce R. Schueneman, Texas A&M Univ. Lib., Kingsville .
