Leading in the Digital World: How to Foster Creativity, Collaboration, and Inclusivity
Amit S. Mukherjee. MIT, $34.95 (192p) ISBN 978-0-262-04394-6
Leadership in the digital era is a whole different animal, argues Mukherjee (The Spider’s Strategy), Professor of Leadership at Hult International Business School, in this canny manual. Finding business books that draw wisdom from the early career moves of long-established business leaders lacking, Mukherjee surveyed 700 executives around the world, augmented by personally conducted interviews, to find out what their approaches are now. The growth and change of technology has fundamentally changed the requirements of leadership, he found, and those who don’t adapt will fail. Focusing on the leadership mindset rather than the nitty-gritty of execution, Mukherjee covers restructuring, adjusting to a customer base that’s constantly evolving, and embracing diversity as an asset. Among the welter of books claiming to direct leaders in the digital age, Mukherjee’s swiftly executed, neatly encapsulated view of digital changes’ impact on business is specifically focused enough to deliver value; it doesn’t provide answers to all the questions, but it does lay out solid starting points for framing them.
