Dubuffet as Architect

Daniel Abadie. %C3%89ditions Hazan (Yale Univ., dist.) $40 (192p) ISBN 9780300176612

Abadie, former director of Paris%E2%80%99 Mus%C3%A9e du Jeu de Paume, provides a thorough exploration of French painter and writer Dubuffet's later-career explorations in large, architectural sculptures: one of several books released to coincide with European exhibitions in 2011-12. Dubuffet's unique style was inspired by "his habit of letting his ballpoint pen wander over any paper to hand whilst on the telephone," and his "visceral refusal of convention" is readily apparent. With heavy paper and a large, wide format, the book invites study of the many color images: completed works, notebook, sketches, and works in progress form an unexpected view into his method. Abadie provides a thorough tour of Dubuffet's later life and sculptural works both completed (such as New York%E2%80%99s Groupe de quatre arbres) as well as those left unfinished (notably the Salon d'%C3%A9t%C3%A9 Studio). Project details are included, from inspiration to design, implementation, and logistical difficulties. Fans of public art and Dubuffet's distinct style should be thrilled with this flurry of recognition and this beautiful tome. (Nov.)
