The story of the fisherman who finds a jewel in the belly of his catch has cropped up around the world. In this colorful volume, the story revolves around Abdul, a fisherman who has the good fortune to find a diamond in the belly of a fish he pulls out of the River Duzi. He brings the jewel to the palace, where the king's daughter has been weeping ever since she lost her diamond. The king is so thrilled to return the jewel to hermaking her smile againthat he offers Abdul the reward of his choice. The fisherman asks that the beautiful palace gardens be opened to the whole community. Moxley's illustrations draw heavily on Eastern-design motifs, but her expressive characters will appeal to all readers. The overall effect is lively and joyous. Ages 5-8. (February)
